Meet the Characters | Reckless
Hear from the dancers about the characters they are portraying in Julianna Rubio Slager’s newest work, Reckless. Senior Apprentice Lezlie Gray shares about her character.
1)What role/character will you be dancing in Reckless?
I will be portraying the role of young Gomer in Reckless. She is an average girl to begin with, who gets caught up with a guy that leads her into the world of sex trafficking.
2) How did you research/prepare for your role? What is something that stood out to you in your research?
I watched videos of interviews and TED talks with sex trafficking victims, sex workers, and pimps to get a better grasp of the different mindsets they have. Something that stood out to me as twisted and warped was how the trafficking industry is seen as a good thing in the eyes of the pimp. That is then passed down to the victims so that they see the pimps as providers of security and safety.
3) Describe the movement/style of the choreography. Is it different/the same as what you've done before? What is the most challenging aspect of the ballet?
The choreography for Reckless is edgy and exciting. The storyline really drives the choreography and the creative process. I’ve done contemporary ballets before, but none like this. There are so many unique elements to the design and choreography of Reckless that really make it one of a kind. There are a lot of challenges to be faced in this ballet—however, I think the most challenging part for me is portraying solely Gomer’s physical presence from age 14-21.
4) Why should audiences see Reckless?
Reckless is a hard story to tell, but one that is so necessary. As I said before, this ballet is one of a kind. There are so many thought-out details that are intricately woven in the story and told through the choreography. It is truly honest, relevant, and breathtaking dance that people everywhere will want to see.
