Dancer Fun Facts | Miranda Rubio
Get to know the professional artists of Ballet 5:8 as we ask them about their hometowns, favorite dance memories, and people who helped them succeed.
Where is your hometown? What is it like?
I grew up in Spring Arbor, Michigan. It's a quiet college town right off of I-94. I love the consistency of it, not much changes from visit to visit. My favorite part of going back is seeing the way that huge trees arch over every roadway!
Is there one person that helped you get where you are today? If so, tell us a little about them and your journey.
I've had a lot of amazing people supporting me over the years. As a long-time student at School of Ballet 5:8, I can honestly say that Mrs. Julianna has had a huge impact on getting me to where I am today. All the way back from middle school when I attended my first summer program here, she was always ready to work with me and give me input and exercises to take back home. Anyone who's trained at a recreational studio knows how valuable instruction from a professional setting is. I never would have made it without her and the rest of the amazing teachers I've worked with here.
What is one favorite or funny memory from your years of dance training?
I have a super sweet memory of one Improvisation Class where our teacher had us dance outside. It had been a consistently sunny spring and we had begged to go out. When she finally allowed us, it was one of the most beautiful classes I've taken. Being able to be inspired by the movent of the sky and trees around us was amazing.
What is your favorite thing about summer in Chicago? Do you have a favorite place to visit/local restaurant/activity?
I love the way Chicago celebrates being outdoors in the summer. Whether you're at the lake, walking around downtown, or at an outdoor festival, you can feel the vibrant pulse of the city. My two favorite places to visit during the warmer months are "Agora," an art installation in Grant Park, and the Lincoln Park Conservatory.
Last thing—what in the upcoming 2021/22 season are you most excited for?
I'm excited to relive the joys of past repertoire coming back (some of which I watched or learned as a student!). I'm super excited to create new work and get back to touring.
