Classic Tale Sparks New Conversations

ANDERSON — A hybrid adaption of one of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s famous novels is being performed live Saturday at the Paramount Theatre.

Ballet 5:8 uses a mixture of music, dance and spoken word to weave a story of fate between two lovers in its presentation of “Scarlet.” The performance also includes local dancers from Anderson Young Ballet Theatre playing children’s cast roles.

Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne, from "The Scarlet Letter," is featured in “Scarlet” as she copes with her guilt and the judgmental society that shuns her as Reverend Dimmesdale silently suffers with his secret sins and a forbidden love.

“The story of ‘Scarlet’ is difficult, but that is what makes redemption shine so brightly,” according to a press release from Ballet 5:8.

The hybrid ballet touches on topics of hypocrisy and shame along with the hope of redemption through Hawthorn’s classic tale.

Following Saturday’s performance, audience members are encouraged to discuss “Scarlet” during an open panel with Julianna Rubio Slager, the artistic director, and artists of the company.

Chicago’s Ballet 5:8 was founded in 2012 as a nonprofit arts organization to engage communities in the city and throughout the nation in conversations of life and faith through innovative storytelling and dance. More than 200 students attend Ballet 5:8’s education center each year.

“Scarlet” is at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre. Tickets, which range from $25 to $32 and $15 for college students and children 12, are available at ballet58.org or by calling 312-725-4752.
