Meet the Characters | Reckless
Hear from the dancers about the characters they are portraying in Julianna Rubio Slager’s newest work, Reckless. Solo Artist Samuel Opsal shares about his character.
1. What role/character will you be dancing in Reckless?
I will be portraying the role of Hosea. He is based on the biblical prophet who marries Gomer, through his actions we can see an illustration of God's love for us.
2. How did you research/prepare for your role? What is something that stood out to you in your research?
The first thing I did while researching for the role was to go directly to the source, reading the book of Hosea. I have also been inspired by other biblical passages to help see the motivations and amazing faith that Hosea had in order to follow God's plan throughout any challenges. More general research for Reckless as a whole has included listening and watching interviews of both survivors and perpetrators of sex trafficking. Something that has stood out is that although there are tragic themes that are present for many stories, each survivor's story is unique.
3. Describe the movement/style of the choreography. Is it different/the same as what you've done before? What is the most challenging aspect of the ballet?
The movement in Reckless is hard-hitting with strong dynamics pushing classical lines to the limit. Using this kind of qualitative range to tell a story is something I have experienced before, however, even if the movement is somewhat familiar the choreographic process for each ballet is distinct, and Reckless definitely has its own flavor. As I am writing this the part of Hosea is just starting to enter into the scene. The challenge that I face in the coming weeks is to clearly show the story in a way that is relatable, staying grounded in the world of the ballet while showing the sharp contrast of intention.
4. Why should audiences see Reckless?
This intense modern-day retelling of Hosea challenges preconceptions and shines a light on issues that are kept in the shadows. Throughout Reckless you will see stunning visuals and gripping storytelling through the art of dance, but more importantly, it shows that even in the darkest times we have someone who cares about us with a reckless love.
