Sophia Snider on the Importance of New Work
Why is it meaningful to be part of a company focused on creating new works?
Being drawn to Ballet 5:8's mission of faith-based storytelling, the repertoire holds great meaning for me. Continuously creating new works is vital because it mirrors God, our Creator, who constantly works within us. It allows us to express the profound aspects of our faith: the sorrow of suffering, the joy of salvation, the patience of hope, the beauty of God's love, and the freedom available to all. With diverse backgrounds and experiences, we want audiences to feel seen by God, which is why we bring a range of new works inspired by relevant issues.
What does it feel like to have a work set on you?
Having a work set on me is both physically demanding and spiritually enriching. As new movement takes shape, I often discover God working within the studio and my personal life. It's a beautiful process that I deeply respect and love.
What is the studio atmosphere like during the setting process?
Before workshopping the movement, extensive research is conducted. The choreographer and dancers immerse themselves in the story, accompanied by personal reflection. In the studio, the process begins with experimentation, guided by concepts, prompts, and the storyline provided by Ms. Julianna. Collaboration is fostered, and I cherish memories of contributing ideas, movements, and personal insights during rehearsals. A single idea can spark a wave of creativity, necessitating attentive presence and intense focus. I liken the choreographic process to building a house, starting with Ms. Julianna's foundation and gradually adding each dancer's contributions until a complete structure emerges. Once the choreography is set, we refine it with details, layered storytelling, polished movements, and nuanced expressions. Seeing each element come together in a new ballet is incredibly rewarding.
What sets the stories we tell at 5:8 apart?
Our stories are relevant to the world we inhabit, connecting us to fundamental truths that sustain us through challenging and joyful seasons alike. Observing rehearsals or glimpsing performances from the wings, I am encouraged and deeply moved by the heartfelt expressions of the dancers.
