Dancer Fun Facts | Jessica Lohr
Get to know the professional artists of Ballet 5:8 as we ask them about their hometowns, favorite dance memories, and people who helped them succeed.
Where is your hometown? What is it like?
I am originally from Houston, Texas. Though I have lived away from Houston for several years now it will always feel like home to me! I love the warm weather, amazing Tex-Mex food, and the fact that so much of my family still lives there. I am beyond excited that Ballet 5:8 will be touring to Texas this year!
Is there one person that helped you get where you are today? If so, tell us a little about them and your journey.
It is really hard to pick just one because there are multiple people who have poured so much into me. I truly would not be the person nor the dancer that I am today without the amazing team that makes up my support system. My dad definitely stands out to me though in that he has taught me about perseverance and courage. He exemplified these attributes just this summer in successfully overcoming heart surgery!
What is one favorite or funny memory from your years of dance training?
A really special memory from my years of training was getting to perform the role of Hermia in Kristy Nilsson's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Everything from the choreography to the music, to the costumes, were so beautiful! To this day acting is one of my favorite parts of dancing and I believe this ballet had a part in creating that love of artistry within me. It was also so much fun getting to perform a role that included so much comedy, which I had not gotten to explore before.
What is your favorite thing about summer in Chicago? Do you have a favorite place to visit/local restaurant/activity?
I love getting to enjoy the sunshine Chicago has to offer in the summer! One of my favorite summertime activities is biking to my favorite local coffee shop (Shoutout to Two Mile Coffee Bar!) and enjoying a good conversation with friends over an iced lavender latte (they call theirs the Bee Keeper. 10/10 recommend!).
Last thing—what in the upcoming 2021/22 season are you most excited for?
I am most excited to be touring again! Along with this, I am looking forward to learning all the new rep in store for this season as well as revisiting some older works that are near and dear to my heart!
