Experience Ballet Like Never Before at the Kehrein Center for the Arts
The Kehrein Center for the Arts Foundation (KCAF) is proud to present a transformative evening of dance and spoken word, created by Black and Latina women, offering a fresh perspective on an art form that has often lacked diversity and accessibility.
On March 1st, 2025, at the intersection of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, KCAF will partner with Ballet 5:8, a resident company at Chicago's Harris Theater, for a special festival. The evening features the premiere of The Caged Bird Sings, a collaboration with Overshadowed Productions that brings Maya Angelou’s iconic poetry to life through dance.

Master Class | Rachel Hutsell
Join us for ballet technique and classical variations with Rachel Hutsell, former dancer with New York City Ballet. $40 for both classes. Open to intermediate and advanced dancers.

Ballet 5:8 is a female and minority-led premiere ballet company recognized for artistic excellence, innovation and beauty. Mexican American Artistic Director Julianna Rubio Slager is a 2023 National Visiting Fellow for the School of American Ballet and a finalist for the Chicago Dancemakers Forum. She creates dynamic ballet experiences drawing from life, faith, and diverse perspectives that tell stories for the 21st century.
Ballet 5:8 is a Resident Company with the Harris Theater and has been featured in Modern Luxury, Dance Magazine, Newcity Magazine, Third Coast Review, with segments on PBS, WGN, NBC, ABC, and FOX.
