Imagine Better | Chicago

  • Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture 2936 North Southport Avenue Chicago, IL, 60657 United States (map)

Saturday, October 15 | 7PM | Athenaeum Center for Thought and Culture | Chicago

Ground-breaking work by Julianna Rubio Slager continues in this mixed-repertoire bill.

Imagine Better invites audiences to imagine a better world through honest, relevant and breathtaking dance. In the intimacy of a theater through the beauty of movement, our hope is that you would witness the good, the beautiful and the true.

The evening will feature two World Premieres. Look to the East by Julianna Rubio Slager and Solace by Matthew Rushing.

Additionally, returning to the stage are two newly beloved Ballet 5:8 fan favorites from the 2021/22 Season, Gospel Impressions and Día de Los Vivos. In Gospel Impressions, Rubio Slager brilliantly transforms the abstract paintings from Makoto Fujimura’s Four Holy Gospels into swirling formations and storylines on stage. Head of Wardrobe, Lorianne Robertson’s exquisite costumes also bring the paintings to life as each costume is expertly inspired by one of the four installations.

Día de Los Vivos explores the pain of depression and suicide and also the joy of being deeply loved and valued. Inspired by Rubio Slager’s own battle with clinical depression this ballet has deeply moved and touched audience members across the country.
