Hispanic Heritage Month at the Belvis Center

  • Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center 4046 West Armitage Avenue Chicago, IL, 60639 United States (map)

On October 14th, join Ballet 5:8, Tata Cepeda from Puerto Rico and SRBCC's Bomba Ensemble for a brilliant FREE performance at the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.  Tata Cepeda opens the performance at 11:30am, followed by SRBCC’s Bomba Ensemble and then Ballet 5:8. Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center is the longest standing Latino cultural center in the city of Chicago and this event marks a great opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event brings back beloved Ballet 5:8 favorites, Mi Familia and Dia de Los Vivos, as well as a sneak peek to Rubio Slager’s brand new work The Lost Women of Juarez. The event is part of Open House Chicago and will be free to attend for all Chicagoans.

Seating is first come, first served. Stay after the performance for a Q&A with the artists from 1:45-2p.

One of 40 organizations recently recognized for its contributions to the history, culture, vibrancy, and identity of communities of color in greater Chicago (see Chicago Cultural Treasures), Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC) is the longest-standing Latino cultural center in Chicago. Established in 1971, it was named in honor of Segundo Ruiz Belvis, a Puerto Rican patriot and member of a secret abolitionist society that freed slave children under Spanish rule. In that spirit, SRBCC realizes its mission to preserve and promote appreciation of the culture and arts of Puerto Rico and Latin America, with a focus on its African heritage.
