The name Ballet 5:8 corresponds to the Biblical verse in Paul’s letter to the Romans that reads, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, ESV). This simple statement of the Gospel is the beginning point of our passion for using classical and contemporary ballet to represent, communicate and celebrate God’s incredible love for us proven through the person and story of Jesus Christ.
The mission of Ballet 5:8, a nonprofit Christian organization, is to engage our students, our professional dancers, and our audiences in worship, and to inspire them toward the pursuit of Jesus. Through performances by the professional company and student development at Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts, as well as master classes, workshops, and speaking engagements, Ballet 5:8 serves the Greater Chicago community in the areas of Christian dance performance, dance education, and evangelism, presenting the art form of dance in a manner that is accessible to large portion of the community.
As we work in the context of our vision and mission, we seek to give priority to the following values:
- Integrity: As an organization and as individuals, we want to live and act, to the best of our ability, according to the standards for moral, ethical and upright behavior outlined in God’s Word, the Bible
- Excellence: As ballet dancers and teachers, we want to be good stewards of our craft, which is literally a gift from God. This means working to maintain a high standard of quality when it comes to our technique, our instruction and our performances.
- Focus: As missionaries and ambassadors of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we want to focus on the basic human need for salvation as a gift through Jesus Christ, and on the subsequent responsibility of the believer to grow in faith, conduct and action.
- Unity: As members of the universal Body of Christ, we want to promote unity among the members of various churches and denominations we partner with them on the basis of the foundation of our faith, the life, death and resurrection of God’s Son Jesus.
We believe, simply, that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 2:23-4, NASB) As Bible-believing Christians, we firmly acknowledge the inerrancy of God’s Word as it is written in the Bible and the influence that God’s truth needs to have on the way we view the world and our lives. We are not affiliated with any particular Christian denomination, but we exhort Christians both inside and outside of the organization to carefully search God’s Word as they make their own decisions concerning various denominational and doctrinal beliefs.
